A woman in her 30s who went to trial for malicious comments directed at singer and actress IU has been fined.

On March 3, Judge Lee Kyung-sun of the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 16 sentenced an malicious commenter of IU, who was charged with insult, to a fine of 3 million won. The woman was accused of writing four malicious comments in April last year that criticized IU's outfits and singing skills.

At the previous sentencing hearing, prosecutors had asked for a four-month prison sentence. However, during the trial, malicious commenter appealed for leniency, saying that the comments were "just a simple expression of symbols and that she lacked sentencing skills due to mental illness."

The court, however, did not accept malicious commenter's argument. "The comments made are judged to be insulting and derogatory personal attacks that go beyond the scope of ordinary expression," the court explained, "which constitutes the offense of insult under the Supreme Court's precedent."

IU has maintained a tough stance against malicious comments. "To date, there are more than 180 defendants, and additional lawsuits are ongoing," agency Yidam Entertainment said in a statement last month, revealing the status of the criminal case. "There will be no settlements or leniency," the agency said, sending a strong warning to malicious posters."

IU continues to pursue legal action against abusers and is committed to maintaining a healthy communication environment with its fans.
