Tesla CEO Elon Musk reacted strongly to Apple's announcement on Tuesday (local time) that it plans to build OpenAI's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT into its devices, including iPhones and iPads.
<"If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS (operating system) level, Apple devices will be banned from my companies," Musk wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account that day, calling it "an unacceptable security breach."
<"Visitors will be required to have their Apple devices checked at the (company's) door, and they will be stored in Faraday cages (conductor boxes that shield them from the outside electrostatic field)," he added.
Musk went on to criticize the idea that "Apple is somehow able to ensure that open AI will protect your security and privacy when it's not even smart enough to create its own AI."
<"Once Apple hands your data over to OpenAI, you have no idea what's actually happening," he said, adding that "they're betraying you and selling you down the river."
<"This is how Apple Intelligence works," Musk wrote in a post, accompanied by an image of OpenAI siphoning data from users' iPhones."
The next day, Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, where it announced plans to build significant AI capabilities into its iPhone operating system, iOS 18, and beyond. Apple introduced the AI system as "Apple Intelligence," and said that it was partnering with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its voice assistant, Siri, among other things.
